Asmara, 14 May 2010- As part of the efforts to develop the transportation sector, work is underway to develop the rail way system, according to the head of the Eritrean railway, Mr. Amanuel Gebreselasie.

Mr. Amanuel told ERINA that work on renovating the railway system had began soon after independence and that commendable progress has been achieved based solely on internal capabilities.

Mr. Amanuel went on to add that the Asmara-Nefasit, Massawa-Ghindae, Ghindae-Nefasit routes are providing efficient services with limited resources and that the steam locomotives are attracting growing number of tourists.

Experts point out that in view of the development of the port of Massawa, the Free Zone and the general geographical location of Eritrea, the importance of an efficient railway system cannot be overstated.

Mr. Amanuel finally reminded that the role and contribution of the public is important in preserving and promoting the authentic steam engines.
