Barentu, 16 May 2010 – The capital of the Gash Barka region, Barentu registered impressive progress and went on to become one of the big cities of the country as a result of the substantial investment made over the past 19 years, Mr. Franco Kubaba, administrator of the sub-zone stated.

Pointing out that the town in 1991 had been a tiny patch of land with very few huts and even fewer houses, Mr. Franco said that a number of buildings including regional administration building, modern referral hospital, hotels, as well as 12-hours electricity service and other infrastructure facilities have been put in place in town owing to the relentless efforts carried out in the post independence period.  He went on to add that there are over 130 social-service rendering institutions and over 1,000 business establishments in the town. Moreover, Mr. Franco said that social service-rendering institutions comprising 8 schools, 3 fuel stations,  and a 20 Km-long road are making due contribution in improving the living standard of the local residents. The town’s size has also increased remarkably.

Reports added that the population count in Barentu, which was only about 10,000 in 1991, has now reached over 30,000.
