Extensive Illiteracy Campaigns Bear Fruitful Outcome

As a result of the extensive campaigns to eradicate illiteracy among adult and elderly nationals, 65% have become able to read and write, the head of Adult Education and Media in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Gebrezgi Dimam disclosed. Asmara, 14 May 2010- As a result of the extensive campaigns to eradicate illiteracy among adult and elderly nationals, 65% have become able to read and write, the head of Adult Education and Media in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Gebrezgi Dimam disclosed.

Mr. Gebrezgi told ERINA that owing to the collaborative efforts of administrative bodies and other relevant organizations, more than half a million adults have been able to receive access to basic education.

Indicating that economic progress cannot be secured while the people remain uneducated, Mr. Gebrezgi said that successful work has been accomplished in different towns and villages around the country and that further efforts are underway to provide basic education to adults in remote areas and communities who lead nomadic lives.

He went on to add that 80 small libraries that include books in different languages have been opened in different villages in the country so that newly literate adults can promote their knowledge.

Mr. Gebrezgi also pointed out that the Ministry of Education is striving to provide access to education to members of the Defense Forces who have not had the opportunity to go to school.
