In the regular session it held in Algiers from May 10 to 15, the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) denounced the unjust sanctions resolution adopted in the name of the Security Council against Eritrea, and called for its annulment.
Asmara, 19 May 2010 – In the regular session it held in Algiers from May 10 to 15, the Organization of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) denounced
the unjust sanctions resolution adopted in the name of the Security Council against Eritrea, and called for its annulment.
In the meeting in which heads of trade unions from 35 countries took part, a delegation from the National Confederation of Eritrean Workers (NCEW) gave briefings on the cause and contents of the unjust resolution. Following the briefings, the OATUU not only adopted unanimous resolution of denounciation but also for its annulment.
Speaking at the meeting, the Algerian Minister of State, Mr. Abdelaziz Belkhadem, noted the significant role of trade unions in changing current challenges in the African continent into a blessing in disguise.
Likewise, the Secretary General of OATUU, Mr. Hassan Sumonu, stated that the sanctions resolution against Eritrea would serve no purpose other than prolonging the suffering of peoples, as witnessed in the experience of various countries. He further pointed out that the OATUU would pass on its resolution to the African Union and the Security Council.
Meanwhile, a NCEW delegation headed by the Secretary General, Mr. Tekeste Baire, held talks with a number of heads of trade unions on developing bilateral relations and the objective situation in the country.
