The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Woldemichael Abraha stated that efforts would be further strengthened towards implementing transportation infrastructure programs in view of the fact that the vitality of ensuring an extensive provision of reliable and competitive land, sea and air transport as well as unswerving communication networks in boosting the nation’s economy and enhancing the people’s standards of living.
Asmara, 23 May 2010 – The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Woldemichael Abraha stated that efforts would be further strengthened towards implementing transportation infrastructure programs in view of the fact that the vitality of ensuring an extensive provision of reliable and competitive land, sea and air transport as well as unswerving communication networks in boosting the nation’s economy and enhancing the people’s standards of living, .
Pointing out that unremitting efforts have been undertaken and encouraging tasks have been accomplished in major strategic programs of each sector in general and providing efficient and reliable services in particular, Minister Woldemichael disclosed that researches have been conducted so as to extend equitable and competent public transport services. He said that impressive achievements have been registered in supervising and evaluating the implementation of road traffic proclamations, undertaking infrastructural works for road safety as well as in introducing institutions to control the technical quality of vehicles and others.
Noting that plans have been mapped out to reinforce the 2010 programs, Minister Woldemichael went on to say that vigorous efforts are being exerted to lay solid ground for attaining tangible progress in the sector.
Regarding sea transport service, the minister stated that significant tasks have been accomplished towards undertaking standard port services and introducing modern facilities and that various programs have been made to ensure human resource development. Speaking about the communication sector, Minister Woldemichael said that the role of telephone service in general and mobile services in particular in facilitating daily life activities cannot be viewed lightly. To this end, 50% discount was made to encourage the public to become beneficiaries of mobile services.
Finally, Minster Woldemichael stated that strenuous efforts are underway in infrastructure so as to provide efficient air transport services. He further underlined that the impact of the renovation and expansion of the Asmara International Airport and the completion of Massawa International Airport on the country’s economy cannot be viewed lightly.
