Infrastructure projects worth over 666 million Nakfa have been implemented in urban and remote areas of the Southern region focusing on expansion of health, education and potable water supply services, as well as drafting, according to Mr. Rezene Fiseha, director general of infrastructure development in the region. In a meeting with the inhabitants of Areza sub-zone, he indicated that 20 schools have been constructed and already begun rendering service in the region in the year 2009/2010, while 22 others are under construction.

He further pointed out that the majority portion of construction of a hospital, 2 community hospitals, 4 health stations and school of nurse assistants is nearing finalization. Drafting of land plots for residential and agricultural purposes, including 9 building complexes and 400 hectares have already been completed and distributed to 3,663 nationals.

Mr. Rezene went on to say that most of such projects were implemented in remote areas which in turn fully attest to the Government’s endeavors to ensure equitable social service in remote areas. Moreover, he noted that teachers’ residences have been constructed in 16 schools in remote areas, besides setting up scientific and computer laboratories, as well as construction of additional classrooms in 6 schools. Efforts are also underway to open pedagogy centers in Senafe and Mai-Mine, he added.

Mr. Rezene stated that 35 potable water supply projects are being implemented in 12 sub-zones of the region, whereas 32 similar projects implemented last year are providing efficient service to the public.
