Over 167,000 Hectares Put Under Cultivation In Southern Region

A total of 167,000 hectares in the Southern region have been put under cultivation, according to Mr. Bahta Tedros, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region. Out of the total number, seeds have already been sown on over 50,000 hectares.

Mendefera, 29 June 2010 – A total of 167,000 hectares in the Southern region have been put under cultivation, according to Mr. Bahta Tedros, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region. Out of the total number, seeds have already been sown on over 50,000 hectares.

Also in line with endeavors exerted by the farming community and the branch office to make the necessary preparations before the onset of the rainy season, about 800 hectares have been leveled through popular campaign in 20 villages. 

Noting that soil and water conservation, as well as reforestation activities are being stepped up in the region, Mr. Bahta pointed out that reserve areas are being put into effect, and that 25,000 seedlings of cactus have been planted in bare hills. 

He further explained that about 20,000 seedlings of lemon would be distributed to the public and that the steps taken to raise milk and meat products, as well as honey and egg continue to bear fruitful outcome. 

Reports indicated that micro-dams with a total capacity of holding about 567,000 cubic meters of water have been constructed this year in the villages of Entseyti, Dengel and Berak, while the Adi-Kemsho micro-dam and two water reservoirs have been renovated.
