Dekemhare, 3 July 2010 – The 66 health institutions in the Southern region and village doctors being deployed in different parts of the region are playing major role in ensuring mother and child care, according to Dr. Tesfalem Gebrekidan, head of the Health Ministry’s branch in the region.

In a meeting with the inhabitants of Adi-Keih, Dekemhare and Senafe sub-zones, he indicated that the number of mothers who visit health centers to make pre-and post-delivery checkup is gaining momentum as a result of the continued campaign. As such, mortality rate and disability as a result of pregnancy and giving birth are declining, he added.

Dr. Tesfalem further called on village doctors, village elders, religious leaders, Assembly members, associations and teachers to work hand in hand with the Ministry so as to register still more gratifying achievements. He went on to say that the number of out-patients visiting health institution has dropped by about 20% thanks to the expansion of health service and raising public awareness regarding the prevention of communicable diseases. The spread of malaria, Tuberculosis and other communicable diseases have already been put under control, Dr. Tesfalem elaborated.

Also in line with efforts to expand health service in remote areas, mobile medical team travels to 110 villages monthly so as to provide the necessary treatment, reports indicated.
