CEN-SAD Summit reaches agreement on reactivating the AU in a manner that meets the aspirations of the African peoples: President Isaias

President Isaias Afwerki said that the Assembly of CEN-SAD Heads of State and Government has reached agreement that the organization should serve as the pillar for reactivating the African Union (AU) in terms of structure, objectives and programs so that it may serve the aspirations of the peoples of the continent. The agreement was reached at the 12th CEN-SAD Summit in N’Djamena, Chad, taking into account the visible weakness of the AU in the aforementioned spheres. Asmara, 24 July 2010 – President Isaias Afwerki said that the Assembly of CEN-SAD Heads of State and Government has reached agreement that the organization should serve as the pillar for reactivating the African Union (AU) in terms of structure, objectives and programs so that it may serve the aspirations of the peoples of the continent. The agreement was reached at the 12th CEN-SAD Summit in N’Djamena, Chad, taking into account the visible weakness of the AU in the aforementioned spheres.

In an interview with ERINA, the President pointed out that Chadian President Idris Debi who is also the current Chairman of the CEN-SAD would present the joint stand of the CEN-SAD member states to the forthcoming AU Summit in Kampala, Uganda. 

In a communiqué it issued at the end of the 12th Summit focusing on the political, security, administration, financial and legal domains, as well as that of AU and international issues, CEN-SAD called on the international community, especially the UN and AU to take the necessary measures, including diplomatic pressure against Ethiopia to immediately implement the EEBC ruling on border demarcation in accordance with the Algiers Agreement.

Moreover, the CEN-SAD Summit not only opposed and rejected the sanctions resolution against Eritrea adopted in the name of the Security Council, but also called for its annulment.

During his stay in Chad, President Isaias held talks with Libyan leader Muammar Khadafi , President Idris Debi of Chad and others on issues pertaining to CEN-SAD, strengthening the organization and  fostering cooperation among member states, as well as bilateral relations and partnership of cooperation. 

President Isaias stated that the meetings provided an opportune moment to highlight Eritrea’s stance regarding various issues, particularly that of Somalia, and thereby create common understanding.

The President returned home in the afternoon hours today after participating in the 12th CEN-SAD Summit.
