Barentu, 4 August 2010 – Members of the farming community in Gash-Barka region are undertaking agricultural activities in an enhanced manner thanks to the continued good rainy season, stated Mr. Medhanie Yihdego from the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region.
He explained that although this year’s rainy season began a little bit late in different parts of the region, commendable rainfall has nonetheless begun to shower in a number of areas in the region.
Mr. Medhanie further indicated that cultivation activities have already been finalized in the sub-zones of Logo-Anseba, Molqi, Shambuko and Laelai-Gash in which rainfall started in June. The sowing of seeds is also nearing finalization in the remaining sub-zones, he added.
Accordingly, out of the total farmland envisaged to be put under cultivation, 75% has been effectively cultivated which is in good condition. Reports indicated that there exist over 200,000 hectares in Gash-Barka region that are put under cultivation through summer rains.
