Farmers in Haikota Hopeful of Bumper Harvest This Year

The farming community in Haikota sub-zone expressed hope to obtain bumper harvest as a result of the agricultural preparations made in advance. Haikota, 20 August 2010 – The farming community in Haikota sub-zone expressed hope to obtain bumper harvest as a result of the agricultural preparations made in advance.

They explained that each family has become land owner in accordance with the land leveling scheme undertaking previously, and that farming activities were carried out at the right time through governmental and private tractors, as well as traditional farming methods.

Mr. Natnael Yonatan from the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone said that this year’s rainy season is quite promising, and that over 13,500 hectares have been put under cultivation in the sub-zone. He also called on farmers to continue their dedication until the crop harvest.

Noting that the Ministry has already made available the necessary pesticides, Mr. Natnael stressed the need for the farming community to inform the concerned body as soon as they witness any incidence of pests. He further pointed out that about 716 hectares are being irrigated through the Hashenkit water diversion scheme, 104 hectares through Tonton water diversion scheme, 556 hectares through Balqai diversion scheme, 138 hectares through Erud water diversion scheme and 230 hectares through Ruba Hagos water diversion scheme. The remaining 10,000 hectares has also been cultivated in reliable plain area.

The farmers noted that that tasks have been effectively accomplished through the coordinated endeavors of the government central garage, Agriculture Ministry, administrative bodies and the general public.
