Strong organizational capacity of farmers vital in boosting milk, vegetable and fruits production, Says Administrator

In a meeting with farmers engaged in dairy and vegetable farming practices, the Administrator of Anseba region, Mr. Gergis Girmai, stressed the need for farmers to redouble endeavors and establish strong organizational capacity so as to boost milk, fruits and vegetable production in a manner that benefits both producers and customers.
Keren, 13 September 2010 – In a meeting with farmers engaged in dairy and vegetable farming practices, the Administrator of Anseba region, Mr. Gergis Girmai, stressed the need for farmers to redouble endeavors and establish strong organizational capacity so as to boost milk, fruits and vegetable production in a manner that benefits both producers and customers.

In the meeting conducted in Keren, the Administrator stated that it is high time for farmers engaged in the aforementioned agricultural schemes to strengthen their organizational capacity and raise productivity, and thereby back up the ongoing endeavors to achieve food security.

As regards milk production, Mr. Gergis pointed out that the necessary study and preparations are being made to relocate dairy farmers, especially those in Keren who have been undertaking such practices in a scattered manner to newly set up facilities in Sutur and Daerotai so as to carry out the activities through modern methods in a an organized manner.

Noting that decision has been made to plant a number of mango seedlings along the banks of the Anseba river, he urged farmers engaged in fruits and vegetable farming to make good use of the available opportunities. Mr. Gergis also called on families to get involved in poultry activities as they play major role in improving families’ living standard. 

The participants of the meeting stated on their part that their products have only been benefiting businessmen rather than the general public, and highlighted the need for easing transport problem so that they may supply the products directly to the public. They went on to say that there exists sufficient pasture and water as a result of the good rainy season, and reminded the Agriculture Ministry to make available the necessary pesticides and other medicines.
