Golij sub-zone: Ministry striving to control illegal animal medicine imports

The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Golij sub-zone has seized a number of expired animal medicines that were illegally imported on the part of individual businessmen, according to Mr. Sereqe Medhane, head of the animal resource unit in the sub-zone. Golij, 20 September 2010 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Golij sub-zone has seized a number of expired animal medicines that were illegally imported on the part of individual businessmen, according to Mr. Sereqe Medhane, head of the animal resource unit in the sub-zone.

He explained that the smuggled drugs have been sold to pastoralists living in a remote area which is a bit apart from the Ministry’s branch office.   He further pointed out that the expired medicines could have grave consequences on animal health.

Mr. Sereqe stated that although the participation of herdsmen in the sub-zone is commendable in cattle vaccination program, the ones in remote areas are being exposed to smuggled expired medicines due to low awareness.

Noting that continued animal vaccines are given in the sub-zone as it is endowed with rich animal resource, he stated that the necessary remedial steps would be taken against those irresponsible individuals who are engaged in illegal practices.
