Asmara, 22 September 2010 – A workshop on handling and controlling various imported persistent organic pollutants and pesticides was conducted yesterday here in the capital.
The director general of environment, Mr. Mogos Woldeyohannes, noted the grave consequences of organic pollutants to biodiversity and the environment resulting from mismanagement, ill-utilization and storage. In this respect, he stressed the need for being cautious in importing pesticides, medicines and chemicals.
He further indicated that the workshop is aimed at mapping out control mechanism towards avoiding the forbidden persistent organic pollutants and pesticides, besides raising the awareness of those members engaged in the task.
Various papers were presented at the workshop in which the participants conducted in-depth discussion.
