Barentu, 25 September 2010 – Milk production being supplied in the market in unorganized manner should be seriously supervised and controlled, said the residents of Barentu town.
They stated that the concerned party should properly check the quality and safety of the milk before it is supplied to the market in an unorganized manner on the part of diary farm owners. The required fixed price of the product should also be put into effect, they added.
The owners of dairy farm on their part stressed the need for the concerned party to collect the milk production in an organized way so that its price and quality could be ensured, as doing so saves transportation expenses.
Likewise, the chairman of dairy farm owners association in the town, Mr. Gebremichael Mosazgi, indicated that over 7 years have elapsed since the establishment of the Association and added that such practice should be put to an end.
The head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Barentu sub-zone, Mr. Tsegazeab Bokretsion, said in reply he gave to ERINA that the task of the branch office essentially focuses on ensuring the health of cattle and admitted the need for taking concerted action, in collaboration with other actors, towards addressing the problem.
Barentu is believed to be endowed with rich cattle resource.
