Inhabitants Of Dekemhare Sub-Zone Called Upon To Enhance Contribution In Controlling Illegal Mining Activities
The mining activities control office in Dekemhare sub-zone called on the local inhabitants to properly monitor the available resources, as land plots in a number of villages in the sub-zone are exposed to soil erosion and illegal mining activities as regards stones and sand.
Dekemhare, 25 September 2010 – The mining activities control office in Dekemhare sub-zone called on the local inhabitants to properly monitor the available resources, as land plots in a number of villages in the sub-zone are exposed to soil erosion and illegal mining activities as regards stones and sand.
The head of the office, Mr. Tesfagebriel Yimesgen, pointed out that 94 licenses have been permitted to undertake mining of stone, sand and lime. However, irresponsible individuals are illegally involved in such activities which practices are exposing agricultural lands and roads to erosion. In this connection, he called on the local inhabitants to enhance collaboration in putting an end to such reckless activities.
Mr. Tesfagebriel further indicated that punishment ranging from 600 to 800 Nakfa is being resorted to against any truck loading sand illegally, and that punitive measures were taken against 50 trucks involved in similar acts in 2009/2010.
Mr. Berhane Fisehaye from the office said on his part that the local inhabitants should enhance participation in controlling the illegal mining of sand, stone and lime, among others. He further stated that the inhabitants of Gura’e, Wutuh, Kileawta, Korberia and Arato are demonstrating close cooperation with the office in controlling the illegal activities. Mr. Berhane called on other villages to emulate their example.
