Farmers engaged in vegetable farming in Abo and Enkaelale, Southern Denakalia sub-zone, said that they would continue the practice in an expanded manner as it is bearing encouraging outcome. Vegetable farming was introduced in the sub-zone 3 years ago at a lower level and individual initiative, according to reports. Asmara, 28 September 2010 – Farmers engaged in vegetable farming in Abo and Enkaelale, Southern Denakalia sub-zone, said that they would continue the practice in an expanded manner as it is bearing encouraging outcome. Vegetable farming was introduced in the sub-zone 3 years ago at a lower level and individual initiative, according to reports.
Mr. Mohammed Awad, a farmer who has planted over 300 date palm trees on about 3 hectares, said that the area is suitable for date palm plantation as it is hot and sandy. He further explained that a lecture given by agricultural experts regarding such plantation has encouraged him to engage in activities of this type, and that the farmers are expecting to reap the fruit of their labor soon.
Similarly, Mr. Mohammed Ahmed, who is cultivating banana, vegetables, date palm and various spices on about 4 hectares in Enkaele said that he is obtaining economic benefits through supplying the products to the markets in Assab and Harsile. He further stated that encouraged by such advantages, he plans to expand vegetable farming.
Mr. Abdalla Ali Hiero, member of the Regional Assembly and inhabitant of Abo, said on his part that the Abo administrative area is endowed with rich underground water resource that is conducive to irrigation farming.
Abo is located 24 Km, south of Assab town.
