Inhabitants of Gash-Barka called upon to enhance participation in combating malaria

In a meeting held in Tessenei sub-zone with the representatives of 10 administrative areas, the local inhabitants were called upon to enhance participation in combating possible incidence of malaria due to the wet rainy season.
Tessenei, 30 September 2010 – In a meeting held in Tessenei sub-zone with the representatives of 10 administrative areas, the local inhabitants were called upon to enhance participation in combating possible incidence of malaria due to the wet rainy season.

The head of malaria control unit in Gash-Barka region, Mr. Afwerki Araia, noted that the malaria epidemic which used to be high in 1998 has dropped to the lowest level in 2004 as a result of the concerted effort on the part of the people and the Government. He urged the public at large to maintain environmental sanitation and cover mosquitoes breeding spots.

Mr. Afwerki further explained that the branch office of the Health Ministry in the region is giving training to village representatives, in addition to distributing drugs.

The Administrator of Tessenei sub-zone, Mr. Teklebirhan    Gebrewold, on his part emphasized the importance of the society’s role in preventing malaria epidemic.

The participants of the meeting highlighted the need to carry out extensive environmental sanitation campaign and the distribution of mosquito nets on time.
