Laelai-Gash, 5 October 2010 – Livestock and pastoralists in Laelai-Gash sub-zone have now access to reliable water as the existing water reservoirs in the sub-zone have impounded sufficient amount of water thanks to this year’s good rainy season, stated Mr. Ateshim Yemane, expert in engineering in the sub-zone.
He explained that the construction and renovation of water reservoirs in the administrative areas of Habela, Shelalo, Sheshebit, Aitera, Gerenfit, Egumu, Awgaro, Debero, Meflech, Biko and Barqet have been undertaken in a properly studied site of rangelands that would enable cattle to get water and pasture in their respective areas. Mr. Ateshim further indicated that terracing and embankments have been put in place along these reservoirs so as to ensure their durability.
The local inhabitants stated that livestock and pastoralists used to travel long distance to get drinking water and grass for cattle in Gash River. They have now been relieved of such difficulties as a result of the construction of water reservoirs in their respective areas, they added.
