Asmara, 6 October 2010 – The Chairman of the Eritrean Teachers Association, Mr. Isak Tesfagergis, said that the various training programs and scholarships being offered by the Government to teachers with a view to bringing about qualitative change in education and upgrading student academic performance is quite encouraging.
He made the remarks in a meeting held yesterday in connection with International Teachers Day which was marked under the theme: “Recovery Begins with Teachers” in which the Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, government officials, representatives of national associations and a number of teachers took part.
The director general of research and human resource development in the Education Ministry, Mr. Petros Hailemariam, said on his part that the Ministry is working tirelessly to revise the nation’s curriculum, upgrade the competence and skill of teachers and schools and strengthening the Teachers Training Institute so as to nurture competent teachers.
Also speaking on the occasion, the director general of general education in the Ministry, Mr. Mussa Naib, indicated that the marking of the event should provide a platform for assessing work accomplishments and identifying shortcomings, and thus reinforce endeavors to develop the education sector.
Cultural programs highlighting the noble profession and values of teachers were also presented on the occasion.
International Teachers Day was marked for the 14th time in Eritrea and the 17th at the global level.
