Gash-Barka region: Farmers called upon to enhance contribution in fertilizing select seeds

The farming community in Gash-Barka region has been called upon to make due contribution in the on-going efforts to fertilize select seeds, stated Mr. Kesete Gebreyohanes, head of the branch office of the Ministry of Agriculture in the region.
Barentu, 7 October 2010 – The farming community in Gash-Barka region has been called upon to make due contribution in the on-going efforts to fertilize select seeds, stated Mr. Kesete Gebreyohanes, head of the branch office of the Ministry of Agriculture in the region.

In a meeting held with farmers and experts engaged in fertilizing select seeds in the Aligidir Agricultural Project, he pointed out that the endeavors are aimed at ensuring the continuation of select seeds, and thereby boosting agricultural output.

Mr. Dawit Amlesom, a farmer who is working at the Tessenei-Aligidir Agricultural Development Project, explained that the task of developing select seed is part of efforts to achieve food security.

According to reports, about 2,200 hectares have been planted with select seeds and are in good condition in the sub-zones of Shambuko, Laalai Gash, Barentu, Forto-Sawa, Tessenei and Golij. The seeds would be distributed to farmers. The farmers expressed readiness to step up efforts in the undertaking.
