The Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Mussa Rab’a, called on farmers engaged in crop harvesting to give special attention to the task of preserving food reserve and storage of seeds.
Barentu, 22 October 2010 – The Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Mussa Rab’a, called on farmers engaged in crop harvesting to give special attention to the task of preserving food reserve and storage of seeds.
He indicated that this year’s rainy season was much better than previous ones and urged the farming community to collect seeds that could yield bumper harvest and the ones that could tolerate the climate of the specific area. The Administrator particularly emphasized the need for the farmers to apply economical utilization of cereals and enhancing storage capacity so that they may relieve themselves from becoming victim of purchasing cereals at high prices during the summer season and for selling their produce at low price during autumn.
Noting that achieving food security does not solely rely on crop harvest, Mr. Mussa explained that farmers should seek means of generating additional income so as to cover expenses for other consumption items they may need.
Moreover, the Administrator reminded area administrators and village elders to work jointly as ever in organizing popular campaign in crop gathering for martyrs’ families and needy nationals.
He went on to say that preserving animal feed is an integral part of endeavors to achieve food security and called on cattle owners to work diligently in storing animal feed and preserving rangelands.
