The head of the branch office of Mining and Energy in the Southern region, Mr. Abraham Tewolde, stressed the need for taking immediate measures to control traditional mining which is causing water pollution in the area.
Mendefera, 24 October 2010 – The head of the branch office of Mining and Energy in the Southern region, Mr. Abraham Tewolde, stressed the need for taking immediate measures to control traditional mining which is causing water pollution in the area.
Explaining that there exist a number of mining sites such as sand, mineral water and gold, Mr. Abraham said that though it is opening job opportunities for many nationals, the pollution problem needs immediate remedial steps. He further disclosed that traditional mining activities are carried out in the sub-zones of Areza, Mai-mine and Emni-Haili, and this should be put to an end before it inflicts danger on humans and animals.
Mr. Abraham said that there are 293 legal mining areas in the region, and called upon the miners to exhibit caution in their work.
