Barentu, 1 November 2010 – A workshop conducted in Barentu town took note of the vital role of administrative areas and other parties in efforts to promote sound ecology.
Area administrators and forest guards from the sub-zones of Barentu, Shambuko and Laelai-Gash, as well as experts of environmental protection participated in the workshop which focused on preserving forestry and wildlife resources. Extensive discussion was conducted on ways of preventing deforestation in Gash-Barka region and future handling of the resource.
Speaking at the workshop, the head of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment branch in the region, Mr. Bereket Kidane, pointed out that pubic awareness regarding the importance of environmental protection needs to be enhanced. In this connection, he urged area administrators and forest guards to effectively discharge their duty.
The head of environmental management at the branch office, Ms. Aster Woldeabzgi, said on her part that villages are expected to play increased role in efforts to preserve the existing forestry and wildlife resource in Gash-Barka region.
