Durfo, 2 November 2010 – Fruits and vegetables farmers in Durfo administrative area are expecting bumper harvest thanks to this year’s good rainy season that enriched underground water resource, stated Mr. Omar Ibrahim Jebib, Administrator of the area.

He indicated that vegetable farms in the area are not only in good condition but the farmers are also reaping commendable harvest. Mr. Omar further noted the hardships the farmers are encountering in selling the products as they are traveling about 16 Km. through beasts of burden to supply their produce to the market here in Asmara.

The area Administrator highlighted the need for introducing a new mechanism that enables producers and consumers to directly interact for mutual benefit at fair price.

The farmers on their part said that all the wells in the area which were drained previously have impounded sufficient amount of water as a result of this year’s good rainy season, which in turn is facilitating vegetable farming. They explained that they are promoting such practices owing to the Government’s encouragement and stressed the need for constructing a micro-dam in the locality so as to boost output.

There are over 370 owners of vegetable farming in Durfo administrative area, according to reports.
