Elabered, 6 November 2010 – The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, said that strenuous efforts are being exerted to boost agricultural output both in terms of quality and quantity through introducing select seeds suitable to the climate of the country for the benefit of the people.
The Minister conducted a visit to Elabered Agro-Industry and observed the micro-dams there that have impounded sufficient amount of water, milk processing plant, tomato paste factory in the process of beginning service and other various agricultural activities. He stressed the need for enhancing the coordinated endeavors already underway to this end.
Mr. Arefaine pointed out that top priority is being given to the task of distributing select seeds, quality types of cattle and deploying skilled manpower. In this connection, the Minister urged the general public, especially farmers to reinforce soil and water conservation activities, promote fruits and vegetables farming, in addition to boosting dairy and poultry products, thus meeting domestic demand.
Likewise, the Administrator of Anseba region, Mr. Gergis Girmai, commended the inhabitants of Elabered sub-zone for their unremitting efforts in reactivating and developing the Agro-Industry Plant. He further pointed out that over 1,200 hectares in the region cultivated through integrated farming is yielding bumper harvest thanks to this year’s good rainy season and the coordinated endeavors of the people and Government.
Noting that the animal feed being provided to dairy farm owners would be on the basis of production rather than the number of cattle, the Administrator called on farmers to breed more cattle that yield high milk production. Efforts are also underway to create conducive ground for providing milk to the public at fair price, Mr. Gergis added.
