Asmat, 9 November 2010 – An action plan aimed at expanding fruits and vegetables farming activities in Embeldai and Fintirer, Asmat sub-zone, would shortly be put into effect, according to Mr. Abubeker Mohammed Jimi’e, Administrator of the sub-zone.

He told ERINA that members of the farming community in the sub-zone have been taking initiatives to undertake development activities along the banks of the Raza stream. Over 100 hectares would also be put under cultivation in the two administrative areas with a view to expanding vegetable farming and improving the living standard of the farming community, he added.

Mr. Mohammed further pointed out that there exist fertile and unexploited land plots in the sub-zone suitable for vegetable farming on which the necessary study has been undertaken by agricultural experts. He went on to say that the farmers should not be concerned about the salty nature of the soil as study has proved it could be diminished through applying proper farming methods.

Members of the farming community on their part urged the Agriculture Ministry to create conducive ground that would enable them to supply products to other towns, beyond the markets of Asneda and Rikeb semi-urban centers.
