Ministry Of Fisheries Introduces Price Changes To Encourage Fishermen

In a meeting he conducted with the fishermen in the Southern Red Sea region, the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, said that price changes of fish products would be made beginning early December this year so as to encourage fishermen in their acitivities.

Assab, 14 November 2010 – In a meeting he conducted with the fishermen in the Southern Red Sea region, the Minister of Fisheries, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, said that price changes of fish products would be made beginning early December this year so as to encourage fishermen in their acitivities.

He pointed out that upgrading fishermen’s capacity is decisive in a bid to exploit marine resources properly to the advantage of the people and country. He also added that effective organization will be introduced, and that efforts are underway to create conducive ground for the fishers to export their products.

Mr. Tewolde stated that price changes is being undertaken by the Government, in addition to encouraging fishers in terms of financial and material support. Accordingly the price of fish would be increased by 18% up to 100%, depending the type of fish.

The Minister further reminded fishers to work diligently giving priority to the implementation of marine regulations, and pass on the skill of fishing to next generation.

The Administrator of the Southern Red Sea region , Ambassador Mohammed Omar, said that the Government’s efforts to utilize marine resources for the benefit of the public gives  fishermen the responsibility to step up their endeavors. He went on to say that the regional administration would make due contribution to encourage fishers.

The fishermen on their part commended the step to change price and added that such initiatives would put additional impetus in their efforts.
