President Isaias Afwerki said that Eritrean-Qatari relations is strategic and one that is based on mutual interest. The President made the remarks in an interview he conducted with ERI-TV on his return home concluding a 3-day working visit to Qatar.

Asmara, 15 November 2010 – President Isaias Afwerki said that Eritrean-Qatari relations is strategic and one that is based on mutual interest. The President made the remarks in an interview he conducted with ERI-TV on his return home concluding a 3-day working visit to Qatar.

Indicating that the existing cooperation of partnership between the two countries comprises a number of domains, President Isaias pointed out that the cooperation in the mining, agriculture, fisheries and tourism sectors in particular is progressing well. He further stated that the talks he held with the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamed Bin Khalifa Al-Thani and other senior government officials focused on additional possible joint programs and investment in the future.

The Government of Qatar is seriously considering the investment in the mining sector, and that programs on putting in place infrastructure facilities in agriculture, fisheries and tourism are underway, the President added.

On regional interests of both countries, President Isaias said that peace and stability are among the main factors which are vital in drawing up strategic programs. In this respect, Qatar needs to work diligently to this end, he elaborated.

President Isaias went on to explain that Eritrea has reached the stage of achieving food security thanks to the continued soil and water conservation programs, as well as building human capacity, in addition to the introduction of modern farming methods. Moreover, he noted that the ultimate goal is developing agro-industry and food processing, beyond ensuring food security. In this regard, substantial investment and developing infrastructure are being undertaken on the part of the two countries based on common experience, the President asserted.
