Asmara, 17 November 2010 – The Agriculture Ministry’s endeavors to extensively introduce fruits that grow in highland zones are bearing fruitful outcome, stated Mr. Ermias Asmelash, head of fruits and vegetables farming in the Ministry.
He explained that about 5,000 peaches and 1,000 apples and the like have been planted on about 18 hectares in Etiaber Hill, Embaderho, by the end of 2009, and that the practice is in a promising stage. Mr. Ermias went on to say that concerted action is being taken to distribute apple, peach, almond and apricot seeds, among others.
Moreover, hybrid of about 15,000 seeds of peach and apple have been prepared and would be distributed to beneficiaries, he added. Basic training has also been given to farmers with a view to enabling them engage in fruits plantation, on top of other agricultural activities. Mr. Ermias further urged farmers to receive advices from agricultural experts and make good use of the available worthy seeds.
