Asmara, 19 November 2010 – The Eritrean Telecommunication Service (ERI-TEL) is exerting vigorous endeavors towards expanding and upgrading internet service, according to Eng. Mihreteab Tesfagergish, head of mobile service in ERI-TEL.

He indicated that internet service is being provided in Asmara, Keren, Massawa, Dekemhare and Mendefera, and that concerted action is being taken to expand it to the major portion of the country along with the installation of power supply. There are also plans to introduce internet service in the towns of Tessenei, Barentu and others shortly.

Replying to public complaints as regards the speed of internet connection, Eng. Mihreteab explained that one should understand the bandwidth taken in correlation with the capacity of the computer in use. He went on to say that the main bottleneck is the fact that such service is being obtained at substantial expenditure from satellite. To this end, the Government is working tirelessly to upgrade internet connection through introducing fiber optic in the sea, which is expected to bring about fundamental solution.

It is to be noted that internet service was introduced in Eritrea in 2000.
