Society Urged To Judiciously Utilize Water Resources

Mr. Mebrahtu Eyassu, the Director General of water department in the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, reminded the public at large to judiciously utilize water resources and abide by the outlined regulations regarding water management. Asmara, 21 November 2010 – Mr. Mebrahtu Eyassu, the Director General of water department in the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, reminded the public at large to judiciously utilize water resources and abide by the outlined regulations regarding water management.

In an interview with ERINA, he said that the Eritrean government’s policy is to implement comprehensive administration of water so as that it can make due contribution in the socio-economic development of the society. In the respect, Mr. Mebrahtu disclosed that a number of ponds, micro-dams, terraces, water diversion schemes were put in place.

The director general pointed out that the content of the underground water resources in the country have deteriorated due to excessive erosion and successive drought, which consequently resulted in reduced fertility and productivity of land, less durability of dams and ponds and other related problems.

Mr. Mebrahtu further said that the undertaken efforts to put in place water reservation infrastructure is expected to bring about significant change in boosting irrigation farming, practicing judicious use of water and introducing modern farming, as well as tackling other problems. He also disclosed that 78% from the entire population in the country are getting potable water supply.

Moreover, Mr. Mebrahtu stated that some of the main programs of the water department include developing surface water resources, renewing underground water sources, applying judicious use of water, preventing water pollution, planting trees and the like.
