Construction Of Canals And Road Repair Activities Underway In Asmara

Various activities, including construction of canals and water pipelines, as well as repairing of roads and infrastructure facilities are being undertaken around Bahti Meskerem Square and Maichehot here in the capital, as part of efforts to keep intact the charm of the city.
Asmara, 24 November 2010 – Various activities, including construction of canals and water pipelines, as well as repairing of roads and infrastructure facilities are being undertaken around Bahti Meskerem Square and Maichehot here in the capital, as part of efforts to keep intact the charm of the city.

Reports indicated that the residents of the area used to encounter various problems during the rainy season as there existed lack of efficient infrastructure facilities. Some parts of the task have already been accomplished.

The infrastructure development department in the Central region, Mr. Eretros Abraham, indicated that the project involves the putting in place of 2 Km-long water canals and sewage, as well as installation of electric poles and telephone lines, in addition to the construction of pedestrian sidewalk. He further pointed out that the task is in line with activities to upgrade the residents’ life style and give added color to the charm of the city. 

In expression of their satisfaction with the project being implemented in Mai-Timket, Chentro and Bahti Meskerem, the residents of Maichehot hosted a luncheon to members of ASBECO Construction Company who are engaged in the project.

Speaking on the occasion, the Administrator of Geza Banda administrative area, Ms. Almaz Abraha, explained that the residents of Maichehot and its environs used to face various problems due to excessive flooding during summer season. The implementation of the project would now relieve them of such problems, she added.
