Mendefera, 21 December 2010 – The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare branch in the Southern region has implemented various social security programs worth over 158 million Nakfa in the region this year.
In a report he presented at an assessment meeting in Mendefera town, the head of the branch office, Mr. Amare Reda, indicated that a benefit scheme amounting to over 126 million Nakfa has been paid this year to a total of 75,000 families of martyrs in 12 sub-zones. Besides, about 3.5 million Nakfa has been extended to 600 families of fallen heroes from the money sent by Eritrean nationals residing abroad, he added.
Moreover, over 11 million Nakfa was disbursed towards supporting and rehabilitating orphans and needy children, in addition to extending interest-free loan amounting to 31 million Nakfa to over 1,400 disabled nationals. There are about 26 orphan children receiving care in 4 group-homes.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Minister of Labor and Human Welfare, Ms. Salma Hassen, stressed the paramount importance of undertaking intensified campaign in efforts to combat social problem.
