Foro, 22 December 2010 – Members of the farming community in Foro sub-zone are constructing water catchments and embankments at a cost of over 1.3 million Nakfa with a view to raising productivity through conserving soil and water.
They stated that river waters flowing to the sea have now been diverted for agricultural purposes as a result of the machinery-backed campaign in which the inhabitants are employing their labor and money. The farmers went on to say that they are working round the clock as the agricultural activities heavily depend on river waters. They further urged the concerned party to give due attention to the renovation of the water diversion scheme in Foro constructed by heavy expenditure but damaged due to heavy floods flowing from the highlands.
The head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone, Mr. Tesfai Tewolde, commended the activities carried out by the farmers for over 6 months, especially their commitment in weeding activities this year.
Reports indicated that although the Bahri summer rains is a little bit late in Foro sub-zone, more than 1,000 hectares have already been put under cultivation and are in good condition thanks to the river waters flowing from the highlands.
