Forming association imperative for farmers in Shambuko sub-zone to boost output

The head of economic development in Shambuko sub-zone, Mr. Habte Mihreteab, called on farmers engaged in vegetable farming along the banks of the Gash river to be grouped in an association and widely introduce irrigation farming so as to boost production.
Shambuko, 25 December 2010 – The head of economic development in Shambuko sub-zone, Mr. Habte Mihreteab, called on farmers engaged in vegetable farming along the banks of the Gash river to be grouped in an association and widely introduce irrigation farming so as to boost production.

He explained that although the Gash River bisects the administrative areas of Bushuk’ua, Shambuko and Binbina carrying fertile soil and sufficient amount of water resource, the irrigation farming being practiced by the farming community is not yielding the desired outcome.

The farmers said on their part that the banks of the river are suitable for irrigation farming and that they have managed to supply different types of vegetables to the market. They, nonetheless, admitted that the available potentials are not being properly harnessed due to lack of effective organizational capacity. To this end, the farmers highlighted the need for the agricultural experts to extend the necessary professional advice, besides addressing the lack of agricultural machineries.
