Gash-Barka Region: Public Called Upon To Enhance Contribution In Combating Malaria

In workshop conducted in Barentu town to assess malaria status in Gash-Barka region, the public in general and health institutions in particular were called up on to enhance contribution in combating the spread of the disease.
Barentu, 26 December 2010 – In workshop conducted in Barentu town to assess malaria status in Gash-Barka region, the public in general and health institutions in particular were called up on to enhance contribution in combating the spread of the disease.

The head of social services in the regional Administration, Mr. Abdullahi Al-Amin Tita, stated that the efforts to control and eradicate malaria in the region have registered encouraging outcome, and stressed the need for strengthening the coordination of health institutions, public and partners to maintain the already achieved progress and further reduce the spread of malaria.

Also, the Head of National Malaria Control Program in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Tewolde Gebremeskel, emphasized the importance of using mosquito nets properly in view of the fact that malaria could spread especially in Gash-Barka region with the good rainy season. He went on to remind that health personnel should take a leading role in reducing the disease in collaboration with the local inhabitants.

The Head of Malaria Control unit in Gash-Barka region, Mr. Afwerki Araya, pointed out that relentless efforts are needed in the sub-zones of Mogolo, Golij Shambko and La’lay Gash.

The participants of the meeting on their part highlighted the significance of carrying out campaigns to enhance awareness of herdsmen and farmers as they are the primary victims of the disease.
