Enhancing public awareness vital for promoting community-based activities, Minister says

The Minister of Labor and Human Welfare,  Ms. Selma Hassen, said that enhancing public awareness is vital for promoting community-based activities towards ensuring social welfare. She made the remarks in a meeting conducted in the port city of Masswa town.

Massawa, 30 December 2010 – The Minister of Labor and Human Welfare,  Ms. Selma Hassen, said that enhancing public awareness is vital for promoting community-based activities towards ensuring social welfare. She made the remarks in a meeting conducted in the port city of Masswa town.

The Minister called for the introduction of effective work procedures towards improving the living standard of needy citizens, as well as promoting their active participation in national development endeavors.

Stating that satisfactory achievement has been registered to this end through the concerted efforts of a number of departments in the Ministry and the regional Administration, Ms. Selma stressed the need for supervising the on-going activities, and outlined the work plans for 2011.

Reports indicated that about 19 million Nakfa has been paid in benefit scheme to families of fallen heroes in the Northern Red Sea region this year, and that over half million Nakfa which was donated by nationals residing abroad has been distributed to such families. Besides, about 15 million Nakfa free-interest loan has been extended to disabled citizens, and that 80% of the loan has already been paid back. 

Discussion was also held during the meeting regarding social welfare, labor safety and the like.
