Conference on boosting milk production in Gash-Barka region conducted

A regional conference aimed at boosting milk production in Gash-Barka region through widely introducing modern dairy farm methods was conducted in Barentu town.
Barentu, 3 January 2010 – A regional conference aimed at boosting milk production in Gash-Barka region through widely introducing modern dairy farm methods was conducted in Barentu town.

In-depth discussion was conducted at the conference focusing on the significance of establishing effective dairy farming association, introduction of modern techniques of animal husbandry, putting in place of requisite infrastructure facilities and the like.

Speaking on the occasion, the regional Administrator, Mr. Mussa Rab’a, asserted that the regional Administration would give due attention to the task of boosting milk production both in terms of quality and quantity through introducing modern dairy farm practices.

The head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region, Mr. Meseret Gebremichael, said on his part that major programs are envisaged for implementation, in coordination with partners, towards reactivating the production of milk and its products. To this end, he urged members of the farming community to redouble efforts in boosting milk production.

Reports presented at the conference indicated that although there are 7 associations engaged in modern dairy farming activities, they have not been supplying the desired products taking into account the number of cows they own.

The head of agriculture extension department in the Ministry, Mr. Hurui Asgedom, stressed the need for properly harnessing the available cattle and animal feed resources in the region, in addition to extensively introducing modern dairy farm methods. In this connection, he affirmed that the Agriculture Ministry would extend the necessary encouragement to farmers who accomplish effective tasks through organizing themselves in an association.
