Efforts underway to promote irrigation farming in Central Denkalia sub-zone

The necessary efforts are underway in 5 administrative areas of Central Denkalia sub-zone aimed at promoting modern methods of fruits and vegetables farming activities and ensuring animal health, according to Mr.  Yonas Tekleab, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone.

Central Denkalia, 10 January 2011 – The necessary efforts are underway in 5 administrative areas of Central Denkalia sub-zone aimed at promoting modern methods of fruits and vegetables farming activities and ensuring animal health, according to Mr.  Yonas Tekleab, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone.

He indicated that training was given to 315 farmers on irrigation farming and animal health to this end, in addition to extending professional advice and material assistance.

The farmers said on their part that their awareness regarding vegetable farming is on the rise and that they are expecting bumper harvest through expanding activities. They further expressed satisfaction for getting relived of nomadic way of life and engage in vegetable farming in their respective area which is enabling them to ensure food security.

Reports indicated that there is about 40 hectares of vegetable farming in the sub-zone in the villages of Abie, Dereb, Afambo, Bel’ubui and Erable. About 300 palm date trees have also been planted, the reports added.
