Measures to prevent destruction of trees underway in Anseba region

The Ministry of Agriculture and other concerned bodies are taking the necessary measures to prevent the destruction of trees in Anseba region, disclosed Mr. Andeberhan Woldeyohannes, head of forestry and wildlife resources in the region. Keren, 13 January 2011 –The Ministry of Agriculture and other concerned bodies are taking the necessary measures to prevent the destruction of trees in Anseba region, disclosed Mr. Andeberhan Woldeyohannes, head of forestry and wildlife resources in the region.

He pointed out that the Ministry is taking steps to control the destruction of trees such as the expansion of farm lands, licenses on wood trade, domestic consumption and the like.  Trading activities regarding wood has been prohibited in Daerotai and Hashishai.

Reports further indicated that out of 79 citizens punitive action was
taken last year to 31 individuals accused of illegal cutting of trees in the sub-zones of Keren, Asmat and Adi-Tekelezan.

Mr. Andeberhan called on the public at large and government bodies to work jointly in combating reckless cutting of trees.
