Keren, 14 January 2011 – Concerted action is being taken to promote rural electrification program in Anseba region, and thereby narrow the urban-rural gap and ensure equitable expansion of services, according to Mr. Sereqe Michael, head of the Eritrean Electricity Corporation branch in the region.
He indicated that a 24-hour electricity service was introduced last year in the villages of Melebso, Mai-Awalid, Halhal, Libena, Debresina, She’ib-Seleba, Terenkua, Gush and Hadish-Adi. Noting that installation of power supply would serve both domestic and industrial purposes, Mr. Sereqe explained that about 1,800 power counters have already been distributed to the public. Installation of electricity in agricultural and business ventures, as well as potable water supply service are also well in progress, while study has been finalized towards introducing similar service in the villages of Kuni’e, Shisherema, Bambi, Begu, Jufa, Sharki and some parts of Hagaz sub-zone. Mr. Sereqe went on to say that preliminary study has been undertaken in Habero sub-zone in the villages of Gizgiza, Kilamet and Felket.
Moreover, various activities were carried out as regards replacing old transformers with new ones in Keren, Hagaz and Shefshefit, as well as putting in place electric poles, upgrading of high voltage electric lines, modification of lines and power counters. He further noted that bill paying centers have been opened in Halhal, Afabet and Elabered so that the beneficiaries may pay their respective bills in accessible places. Mr. Sereqe called on the general public to make good use of the available service and be cautious of the danger of electric misuse.
The inhabitants of the respective localities expressed satisfaction with the newly introduced service and stressed its significance in facilitating the pace of urbanization in the various areas.
