Minister commends good use of health service in Southern Red Sea region

The Minister of Health, Ms. Amna Nurhusein, stated that making good use of health services, especially mother and child care in the Southern Red Sea region is an encouraging step that prompts for more accomplishments. Assab, 21 January 2011 – The Minister of Health, Ms. Amna Nurhusein, stated that making good use of health services, especially mother and child care in the Southern Red Sea region is an encouraging step that prompts for more accomplishments.

At a meeting held in Assab town aimed at assessing the activities of the Ministry’s branch, it was disclosed that permanent and mobile health service in the region is facilitating the provision of better service to the public. The beneficiaries themselves are also making optimum use of such services, as well as of awareness raising campaigns and lectures.

A report presented at the meeting indicated that the number of mothers giving birth in health institutions in 2010 showed a 9% growth compared to the previous year thanks to the endeavors made in ensuring mother and child care. Also in line with efforts to introduce community-based sanitation program, the society is getting accustomed to the habit of toilet use. Backward practices are also on the wane as a result of the undertaking of continued campaign.

The head of the Ministry’s branch in the region, Dr. Afwerki Berhe, said on his part that the envisaged programs have been effectively implemented on the set timetable, which in turn contributed to visible reduction in mother and child mortality rate.
