Gash-Barka region: Infrastructure facilities worth 480 million Nakfa put in place

Barentu, 22 January 2011 – The putting in place of various infrastructure facilities of social services in different parts of Gash-Barka region last year provide added impetus to the pace of development in the region, stated Mr. Haile Asfaha from the infrastructure development department in the region.

He explained that about 480 million Nakfa was disbursed for the putting in place of infrastructure facilities in 14 sub-zones of the region as regards education, health, potable water supply project, residential housing complexes and others. Ms. Haile further indicated that the tasks include the construction of 74 schools ranging from elementary to secondary level, 19 health institutions and residential complexes, as well as the implantation of 27 solar energy-generated potable water supply projects. 95% of the envisaged projects have also been effectively implemented, he added.

Mr. Haile also pointed out that the construction of foam-made residential complexes in Tessenei and Gerset is progressing well, and that installation of electricity has been finalized in the semi-urban centers of Shambuko, Tokombia, Binbina, Bushukua and Mogolo.

Reports indicated that the expansion of mobile phone service is being stepped up in the region, and that Bisha and its environs got full coverage of the service in 2010. A new station would also be opened this year at “Mierai Berawur” along the Mai Dima-Molqi route that would enable the remaining part of the region to get access to mobile service.
