Electricity service made available in 160 areas

In line with efforts to promote electricity service in all parts of the country, over 160 rural, semi-urban and urban areas have already become beneficiaries of power supply, according to Eng. Abraham Woldemichael, general manager of the Eritrean Electricity Corporation.

Asmara, 25 January 2011 – In line with efforts to promote electricity service in all parts of the country, over 160 rural, semi-urban and urban areas have already become beneficiaries of power supply, according to Eng. Abraham Woldemichael, general manager of the Eritrean Electricity Corporation.

He explained that before independence electricity service was limited to some areas around Asmara, and that the remaining major part of the country was marginalized from such service. In the wake of independence, however, strenuous efforts have been exerted and that a number of villages in remote areas have now access to electricity service, Eng. Abraham elaborated. There are also plans to install power supply in 83 villages shortly, he added.

Moreover, the Corporation would undertake major programs beginning this year focusing on putting in place of power installation stations in Dubarwa and Adi-Keih, connecting electric lines between Dekemhare and Adi-Keih, as well as distribution of electric lines from Ginda to She’ib and Hirgigo to Foro.  The task of replacing old electric networks with new ones in Asmara would also be part of the program, he explained.

Eng. Abraham further called on the general public to be cautious about proper use of electricity.
