Micro-Dam Under Construction In Kaluq Administrative Area

A micro-dam is under construction in Kaluq administrative area, Geleb sub-zone, at a cost of about 2 million Nakfa with a view to easing potable water supply problem and promoting irrigation farming.

Geleb, 26 January 2011 – A micro-dam is under construction in Kaluq administrative area, Geleb sub-zone, at a cost of about 2 million Nakfa with a view to easing potable water supply problem and promoting irrigation farming.

The supervisor of the project, Mr. Bihimot  Ainialem, stated that on top of its contribution in tackling potable water supply, the micro-dam is expected to irrigate over 20,000 hectares below it. He further explained that water catchments and embankments have been put in place around the dam so as to prevent silt deposition.

Mr. Bihimot indicated that more than 100 people and trucks are actively engaged in the undertaken on a daily basis. He also called on the local inhabitants to enhance participation in the project so as to finalize the construction of the micro-dam before the onset of the rainy season.

The inhabitants said on their part that the project would enable them to actively engage in fruits and vegetables farming. They also stated that previously they were compelled to travel long distance to fetch water that was not even up to standard. It would particularly relieve women from such problem, they added.
