Vegetable farming activities being stepped up in Forto-Sawa sub-zone

Farmers in Forto-Sawa sub-zone who have transformed from nomadic pattern of living to sedentary one and currently engaged in agricultural activities are leading better lifestyle.

Forto-Sawa, 8 February 2011 – Farmers in Forto-Sawa sub-zone who have transformed from nomadic pattern of living to sedentary one and currently engaged in agricultural activities are leading better lifestyle.

They explained that the area is endowed with fertile soil and rich water resource, and that they are improving their living standard through getting involved in farming activities. They further explained that the lectures offered helped them to get familiarized with modern vegetable farming. In this respect, the farmers voiced determination to continue the practice with added vigor.

The Administrator of the sub-zone, Mr. Abdelkerim Idris, said on his part that prior to independence, there existed no meaningful vegetable farming in the area. At present, however, more than 300 farmers are undertaking vegetable farming on about 3,000 hectares in the administrative areas of Forto, Tel’ai, Melober and Homib.
