Afabet, 9 February 2011 – A meeting held in Afabet town took note of the encouraging outcome scored in uprooting harmful practice as a result of growing public awareness.
Reports presented at the meeting outlined the numerous harms inflicted on children and women due to low societal awareness and backward practices, and that endeavors being made to combat the practice is bearing positive outcome Still more concreted action is required to deeply uproot it.
The head of social services in the sub-zone, Mr. Osman Adem, pointed out that women in particular are the prime victims of harmful practices and said that committees have been set up in various areas to raise societal awareness.
The head of the Health Ministry’s branch in Northern Red Sea region, Mr. Abraham Yemane, said on his part that health institutions, in collaboration with administrative bodies, are working tirelessly to bringing about concrete change in this regard.
Likewise, the head of family health fertility in the Ministry, Dr. Berhana Hailu, outlined the tasks accomplished in the sub-zone as regards avoiding harmful practices which should be emulated by other sub-zones.
