As part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to eradicate illiteracy, 80 libraries have been opened in rural areas to prevent relapse among the newly literate nationals, according to Mr. Gebrezghi Dimam, head of adult education and media at the Ministry.
Asmara, 13 February 2011- As part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to eradicate illiteracy, 80 libraries have been opened in rural areas to prevent relapse among the newly literate nationals, according to Mr. Gebrezghi Dimam, head of adult education and media at the Ministry.
Mr. Gebrezghi further added that simple reading materials relevant to the life style in rural areas have been made ready for the libraries.
Indicating that sustainable economic progress cannot be secured without educating the people, Mr. Gebrezghi pointed out that efforts to provide basic education for each and every citizen have resulted in commendable outcomes and that similar intensive efforts are underway in remote areas of the country as well as among nomadic communities.
He went on to state that adult education programs have been extensively pursued among members of the Defense Forces and that some have even made it to secondary education. As a result of the on going illiteracy eradication campaign in the country, 65% of those who had been denied access to education for various reasons are now able to read and write.
Reports from the Ministry of Education indicate that as a result of the collaborative efforts of administrations and other relevant bodies in the post independence years, more than half a million nationals have eradicated illiteracy.
