General Public Called Upon To Enhance Blood Donation

The director of the Eritrean National Blood Bank, Dr. Yifdeamlak Tesfamariam, called on all sections of the society to raise awareness and enhance blood donation.

Asmara, 14 February 2011 – The director of the Eritrean National Blood Bank, Dr. Yifdeamlak Tesfamariam, called on all sections of the society to raise awareness and enhance blood donation.

He explained that the awareness of the society in donating blood is on the rise, and that awareness raising campaign would be stepped up. Outlining the precautions applied in blood donation activities, Dr. Yifdeamlak indicated that individuals suffering from high and low blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases are not allowed to donate blood, while those free from any kind of disease in the age group of 16 to 60 and whose weight is above 50 kilos are eligible to donate.

Noting that the number of voluntary blood donators increased from 60% in 2002/2003 to over 85% at present, he stressed the need for undertaking still intensified campaign. Dr. Yifdeamlak pointed out that the majority of blood donators are high school and college students, and called on other sections of the society to emulate the noble initiative.
